Ambalapuzha Sree Krishna Temple

Adorable Ambalapuzha Sree Krishna Temple – Alapuzha

Kerala is bestowed with the best fortune of possessing idols that are made by God himself. We have such three God – made idols of Krishna at Guruvayoor, Thripunithura and Ambalapuzha. At Ambalapuzha, Lord Krishna is worshipped in infant avatar. Paintings of the 10 avatars of Lord Vishnu beautify the inner walls of the chuttambalam (temple). The temple also has a small structure called the Guruvayoor temple where the deity of Lord Krishna of Guruvayoor was kept in safe custody during the 1790 invasion of Tipu Sultan. During the annual festival which falls during the month of April, lakhs of devotees frequent the temple and partake in the feast.

Once in every 12 years, sorcerers perform the pallipana ritual. The temple is very famous for its Palpayasam (a delicious milk porridge) given to devotees after offering it to the God. It is golden in colour and unique in taste. You would have never ever tasted such a delicious porridge. Water for the Palpayasam still comes from the sacred Mani kinar, which is an old well south west of the temple, where the rice is also washed. Averagely, 150 litres of Palpayasam is prepared everyday but there is never any surplus.

Ottan Thullal’, the satirical art form created by poet Kunjan Nambiar was first performed here at Ambalapuzha temple. The temple has also been appreciated by the great legendry gems of Kerala like Thunchath Ezhuthachan and Kunjan Nambiar. The temple is opened from 3 a.m. to noon and from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
