Kuthira Malika – Trivandrum
Once the residence of Maharaja Swathi Thirunal, Puthen Malika located at Thiruvananthapuram, is also called as Kuthira Malika (Horse Palace). It is a two-storied linear structure with mind-blowing architecture. The upper storey’s south portion contains 122 horse faces as lattice supporting the eave of the roof.
There 80 rooms with open varandas built in typical Kerala style. Now this palace is converted into a museum and only 20 rooms are functional. The museum houses very interesting and rare artifacts and paintings belonging to the Travancore kings.
Swathi Thirunnal’s study and reading room on the first floor, is referred as the Tamara Muri (Lotus room) because it has a round lotus shaped roof, which has been painted using natural vegetable dyes. This Kuthira Malika is a structure of real incredulity and it is worth a visit. After seeing that we will think whether humans have done these marvels on wood, it is that extraordinary!
