Cherman Perumal Juma Masjid (Mosque) – Kodungallur

According to the legend, this mosque is believed to have been built in the 7th century at the behest of the king, Cherman Perumal who embraces Islam and went to Mecca. The Cherman Perumal Juma Masjid has been reconstructed and so the original mosque does not exist except for a small central portion that survives.

The present structure is modern and shows little resemblance to Kerala architecture but the old mosque was built in typical style with timber and tiled roof, fences for opening and temple tank for ablutions. The lamps for lighting were also the same as that used in temples. A huge bronze lamp is still kept lit inside and people from all religions contribute oil for keeping this light burn forever.

One aspect that makes this mosque unique is that it faces the east. However, the basic alignment of the mihrab, ell known for its craftsmanship and architectural beauty, is on west.
