Bekal Fort – Kasaragod
The Bekal Fort is a 17th century fort and the biggest attraction of Kasaragod, which is located 16 kms from the town. This fort was built by Shivappa Nayak of Bednore and it subsequently fell into the hands of the British.
The fort contains the Anjaneya Temple, underground secret tunnels, moat and an arsenal used to store weapons. The aisle along the side of the fort provides a majestic vista of dawn and dusk. The observatory tower, which is 80 inches in circumference, is the most visible landmark of the fort. The entire fort has been built of laterite blocks. Noteworthy elements of this structure are the seaside bastion jutting into the sea on the west and the pathway connecting the fort to the beach, which is a great attraction for tourists. The added attraction on the Bekal Fort is the Bekal Beach. We can also notice an old British guesthouse build in 1909, which is now being developed by BRDC as an accommodation bungalow for visitors.
