Varkala beach is a bewitching place which mesmerizes you with its marine charms and godly power. This picturesque landscape is located 54 km north-west of Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), the capital of Kerala. Varkala is not only a tourist corner but also a pilgrimage center. If you want to feel the serenity and coolness of Nature, this beach is an ideal holiday destination. This is the best place along the Kerala coastline where you can see the sun like a golden ball slowly sinking into the sea. The crimson and vermillion sky encourages the poetic notion in you.  It is the only place in southern Kerala where one can find adjacent cliffs to the Arabian Sea. These cliffs have a unique geological feature, that is why it is known as “Varkala Formation” as recognized by the Geological Survey of India. There are innumerable water spouts and spas on the sides of these cliffs which makes it more attractive.

 The water flowing from the hill is believed to have medicinal elements in it. Many tourists come here to drink and bathe in this holy water. This beach is also known as “Papanasham Beach”, as it washes away all our sins with a dip in this holy water.

 This place is also blessed by Lord Ayappan with his presence in Sree Janardhana Temple. The new moon day in the month of “Karkidakam”( from mid July to mid August),according to the Malayalam calendar, is considered to be an auspicious day as millions of people come to the beach to pay tribute, known as ‘Vavu Bali’ to their great ancestors who rest in peace in the heaven. This 900 years old temple is referred to as ‘Dakshin Kashi’ (Benaras of the South) .The temple has an ancient bell removed from the shipwreck, donated by the captain of the Dutch ship which sank near Varkala without any mishappenings. Other major landmarks in Varkala are the Sivagiri Mutt, established by Sree Narayana Guru-the great social reformer and the Varkala Tunnel, part of the TS Canal, which was an important waterway during independence. It also provides with exclusive Ayurvedic treatments, Backwater cruises, Para gliding, Yoga training and sight-seeing at Neyyar Wildlife.
