Bekal Beach

Every beach has a story of its own. Situated at the northern tip of Kerala, 140 km from Kasaragod, Bekal beach has long marginal palm trees, white sand, turquoise water and a huge Bekal fort. The silver sandy beach is a delight to our senses. The atmosphere is very calm and composed. This beach will soon be developed as a big resort center. The Bekal Fort is considered to be the landmark on the beach. This imposing circular fort is one of the largest and best-maintained historic forts in Kerala which offers a good view of the beach.

This fort spreads its wing over 35 acres of land. You can still cherish the history as you view the unruffled Lakshadweep Sea from the tall observation towers of the fort. The barricades of Bekal Fort have cannons pointing out to the sea which makes us remind of trading ships coming to the Bekal Beach under the protective cover of the guns, which guarded them from pirates and rival merchant ships. This is one of the largest forts in Kerala and has been under the control of various powers including Vijayanagar, Tipu Sultan and the British. The visitors must plan their visit between the months of August and March.

This is the best time as you will be able to experience the thunderous sound of the waves of Arabian Sea even at night. This particular beach has numerous historical significances such as there is a mosque of Tipu Sultan, cannons of Bekal Fort and hibernated ports. The architectural form of the mosque is truly classical.  The ‘Bekal Fort Beach’ is being developed as an exotic beach location by the Bekal Resorts Development Corporation (BRDC). The evening is the best time to visit this beach.

You can see the melting of the sun at the backdrop of the silent sea. The experience will relish your senses. You can even see the ships set to sail aiming to reach their terminuss. The nearest airport to Bekal Beach is Mangalore in Karnataka, India, which is 50 Km away. Kasargod is connected by rail and road to the rest of Kerala.
